I have been asked a few times to do a Weird Al 20 20 countdown. Well, this week marks the anniversary of the release of his first album in 1983, last week we remembered his first tv appearance in April 1981... and 2018 marks 40 years in music for Weird Al... so that's 3 pretty good reasons to pay tribute to one of the world's most unique entertainers. So join us as we play the top 20 hits parodied by Weird Al, and we'll get a taste of his take on those songs.... and no suprise that his 2 biggest chart hits are at number 1 and 2 in the Weird Al 20 20.

We're visiting the week when a geneal election was taking place in the UK, marred by industrial disputes and tough times. At the end of it all.. it was the contender they called the "Iron Lady" who got the job. Almost amongst the hits from this week in 1979, there's the end of the Cylons for now.. we'll remember a tv ad to celebrate the year of the child... and our number 1 hit comes from a group who started with the name "Pheonix Press". Find out who that was when we play the top rom  late April 1979.

To commemorate ANZAC Day, it's a 20 20 Retro Countdown celebrating Australian and New Zealand music. Join us for the top 10 Kiwi artists followed by the top 10 Aussies, to give us the greatest 20 arists from the "lands" down under. Along the way too, more of the other great things from either side of the ditch.

 

janefonda.jpg Thursday - Getting fit with the hits of this week in 1982!

This countdown takes us bake to the week when Jane Fonda released her first work out video. So we'll remember that amongst the top 20 of late April 1982. There's also the end of a popular UK Sitcom.. And there was another first for NASA. At the top of the chart was the theme to a popular TV show at the time about a school teacher who was visited by aliens. More on that when we get to the top of our chart from this week in 1982.

Yes, we'll give our top 20 hits about life a second lease on life. 20 songs with life in the title from the Talk Talk song that was covered by No Doubt to the big hit from a movie that came with very strict instructions. A few life lessons and 20 life hits on Friday's 20 20.

Yes, Excalibur was the hit movie of mid-April 1981... we'll hear the trailer amongst the top 20 from that week.. and we'll also celebrate the rise to fame of Weird Al Yankovic. At the top of the chart - we'll hear the story about how the singer thought she might land herself a prince with her  number 1 hit.

Do you remember when everyone was trying to solve the murder of Laura Palmer? We're heading back to Twin Peaks while we play the hits of mid-April 1990. Well, here's a bit of useless trivia - he's also the voice of Mr Crabs on "Spongebob Squarepants". Anyway, back to the chart from this week in 1986 - that features a number of hits from movie soundtracks (setting us up for Friday's countdown) including the number 1 from "Jewel Of The Nile", The stars of the movie featured in the film clip for the chart topping hit.

In this countdown, we'll remember one of the great celebrations of test match cricket - the Centernary Test, played in mid-March 1977. The match, played 100 years after the first test between Australia and England in Australia was remarkable for the result - more on that amongst the top 20.. with a number 1 from a group formed in Germany featuring members from Jamaica and Aruba. This countdown takes us back to the week when one of the all time classic TV variety shows "Hey Hey It's Saturday" was settling into a new time slot. It started in 1971 as a Saturday morning children's tv show. Then for 15 years it was the top rated Saturday night entertainment feast. There's that and the number 1 that didn't turn out the way the songwriters hoped on our trip back to early March 1984.

Lethal Weapon, one of the great action movies of the 80's hit the cinemas during this week in 1987... and it gets a run amongst the hits of early March. Also, our number 1 is an interesting one. It comes from a singer who just seemed to pop up from nowhere... but he actually had quite a long music background. You can hear about it during our trip back to this week in 1987.

One of our favourite countdowns featuring hits with foreign lyrics...whether it be a few words, few lines or the whole song. There's a real mix in this countdown - German, French, Spanish - even Zulu lyrics... and our number 1 comes from a group who's lead singer only visited Australia for the first time in the last couple of years despite spending a number of weeks at number 1 in the mid 80's. That and more amongst the foreign lyrics hits.

comedy.jpg Tuesday - It's a Comedy Company inspired trip back to 1988!

It was in late February 1988 that one of the most iconic comedy shows of the 80's premiered on Australian TV...It's the Comedy Company with great characters like Kylie Mole, Con The Fruiterer, Russ The Postie, Uncle Arthur and my favourite - Col'n Carpenter. So we've got the top 20 from this week in 1988 featuring the number 1 that was written for a movie and had to adhere to very strict instructions.

Remember Tom Baker.. arguably the greatest ever Dr Who. Well it was during this week in 1981 that Mr Baker hung up the hat and scarf after 7 years. That wasn't the only TV news from late Feb 1981... there was something new on Australian television... and a pint sized US TV star hit the big screen. All that and the number 1 from a New Zealand group who came and went in just 3 years.
