Hi it's Aaron... join me as we turn the 20 20 Retro Countdown clock back to mid July 1980...

The week when the Moscow games started! A US lead boycott meant 120 Aussie athletes competed under the olympic banner and not the Australian flag. We brought home 9 medals from that games including 2 gold - both won in the pool.

While that was going - one of Australia's all time favourite game shows started...

If you were heading to the movies during this week in 1980 - chances are you were going to see this..

We'll also remember a comedy legend and find out who inspired Elton John to take a break from touring..as we visit mid July 1980 on the 20 20 Retro Countdown...

July 1993

Join us on a trip back to mid July 1993... the week when Kieren Perkins proved he was king of the pool - smashing his 1500 metre world record by more than 5 seconds..

While Kieren was stamping his authority on the pool... an Aussie TV show was slipping away.. it was around this time in 1993 that it was announced that this popular Drama was coming to an end..

There was still a little bit of practise to come.. the final episode didn't air until November - and then channel 7 picked it up for a short time..

From tele to the big screen... this movie premiered during mid July 1993..

And finally - as we wait for the Absolutely Fabulous movie to hit the cinemas.. the 20 20 takes us back to the week when the tv show started in Australia..

July 1986

In the next 20 20 Retro Countdown - we're heading back to mid July 1986..

When the sequel to the 1979 Sci Fi Horror "Alien" hit the cinemas..

Mid July '86 was also a time when athletes put the turmoil of 80's olympic games behind them... After the US led boycott of the Moscow games... and the reduced comp at LA in 1984... there was a new international competition that everyone was invited to...


While athletes battled it out at the 1986 Goodwill Games... a singer and his former band battled it out on the charts..

   

 

And it was during mid July 1986 that we were left hanging following the final episode of this TV series..

JUly 1980

Got the top 20 from mid July 1981 in the next 20 20 Retro Countdown..

It was the week when we met Arthur...

Yep, "Arthur" starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli was released during in July 1981 and was one of the biggest movies of the year...

& we'll remember when Ninetendo released the charcter who would go on to become the first computer game superstar!

It's Donkey Kong.... and maybe you or the kids played Donkey Kong on one of these..
