Monday - Jon Moss joins the 20 20!

Culture Club are preparing to tour Australia from November 30 and we're celebrating with drummer Jon Moss joining us on the 20 20. The pin up boy of the group takes us back to the glory days of one of the most iconic bands of the 80's, talks candidly about his relationship with Boy George and gives us a scoop on the new album.  Tuesday - The hits that stopped the nation!

Join us for a countdown of the songs that were at number 1 when the Melbourne Cup was run in years past. There's 20 songs that were in the top spot on the first Tuesday in November - and we'll look back on past winners of the cup.... And here's my tip for the big race - Humidore... but trust me - I'm better at picking hits than horses.

 

 Wednesday - Joh was the pick in 1986!

We're playing the top 20 from a time when John and the Nationals were celebrating a dominant win in the Queensland state election. It was a victory that had nation wide effect - because, it was after that election that he turned his attention to Australia's top job. He began attacking Prime Minister Bob Hawke and launched the Joh for PM campaign. We'll remember that on our way to the number 1 from this week in 1986 - the hit inpired by African musicians.

 

 Thursday - we get Carried away to 1976!

Yes, the horror Carrie was released during this week in 1976... so we'll remember that and the top 20 from mid November. It was ABBA's hey day.. they're inside the top 20 twice... and all those staples of the mid 70's make an appearance.. the Bee Gees, Queen, Rod Stewart and Bryan Ferry.  Friday - We're Back Playing the Bills!

We're starting to drag out some of our favourite countdowns of the year - and this is high on the list. All those Bills... Billy Joel, Billy Idol, Billy Ocean, Billy Thorpe, Billy Field.... there's 20 of them as we play the bills!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Monday - the na na na's are back!

Recently, we counted down the la la la hits... it was a follow up to the na na na's.. and don't worry - the da da da's are on the way... but in the meantime, we bring back one of our favourites... the na na na's!

 

 Tuesday - Happy Halloween!

Yes, no tricks here - its all treats - with 20 halloween themed hits... from werewolves to witches - it's a "thriller" all the way to number 1... and along the way we'll remember some of those classic halloween specials of american tv shows that gave us our introduction to halloween.

 

 Wednesday - time to put on the party hats!

I don't know about you - but November is a busy month for birthdays at my place... my wife, mother and mother in law all have birthdays within 9 days of each other... so gotta get through this countdown quickly, cause I have some shopping to do. Don't miss the November Birthdays countdown featuring a very special celebration... Tiny Tina Arena is 50! So, time to bring out the embarrasing photos...

 

 Thursday & Friday - Biggest Countdown Ever!

Yes, it's the top 20 too big for just one countdown!! It's the epic hits!! Those classic songs like Bat Out Of Hell... American Pie.... Evie (parts 1,2,3) that had all the elements of a Cecil B Demille movie.. They're long - they tell a story - they're epic!!  Monday - Best Ever! Movies & Covers!

I love countdowns about movies - and can't beat some of the covers countdowns... now, one of favourites featuring movie covers! You know, it's those songs that were covered for movie soundtracks. In most cases it was to set the movie theme - like "Mustang Sally" for the Commitments - "La Bamba" the title track from the movie about Richie Valens - or the movie Buster - when we were taken back to the 60's by Phil Collins with "Groovy Kind Of Love".... Then again, there's just songs that were just revived for movies and became big hits..... Then, at number 1 - a hit from the biggest selling movie soundtrack of all time!

 

 Tuesday - The News Was In The Skies!

We're visiting this week in 1990 - when the deregulation of the Australian airline industry came into effect. We started to see new carriers, lower fares and airlines flying into new regions. While that was going on in the air - on the airwaves, we were listening to the New Zealander who moved across the ditch when fame back home became - in his words "scary"... and our number 1 comes from a rapper who says winning a grammy made his music more accessable! We'll also remember the movie "Quigly Down Under" as we play the top 20 from this week in 1990!

 

 Wednesday - Fame - at the movies and on the charts!

Yep, it was the week when the hit movie "Fame" premiered at the cinema - and the hit song by Irene Cara was inside the top 5 - it's late October 1980. Also, Sydney and Melbourne residents were watching a new TV channel launched on United Nations Dayand Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser was settling back into the lodge after the Liberals defeated Bill Hayden's Labor Party. On the Charts - Diana Ross made a comeback reaching number 1 with her first hit in 5 years. She refelected on her career - calling herself an American success story. All that as we turn the 20 20 Retro Countdown clock back to this week in 1980!

 

 Roseanne headlines our hits from late October 1988!

Yes, one of the most honest and raw tv sitcoms of all time, "Roseanne" started during this week in 1988. Also Michael Jackson was on the big screen, Expo was wrapping up in Brisbane and the Kangaroos won the Rugby League World Cup. We'll remember all of those special events as we feature the top 20 from late October in our bi-centenial year. And there were plenty of Aussie artists on the charts - but the number 1 was a hit featured earlier in the week during our "Movie Covers Countdown"

 

 Friday - Remember the tv show? - here comes the 20 20!

Yes, it's the top 20 groups with three members - and there are heaps! Let's face it - 4 members has always been the standard - lead singer, guitarist, bass guitar and drums... but the groups in this 20 20 didn't want to share the attention with a 4th member - they did it with 3! Now, it's the amount of members while the groups were at their peak...How many can you name? So join me as we feature groups where "Three's Company"!

 

 

  Monday - it's the La La La hits.

A little while ago - we played songs that featured "na na na's" - 'bout time we played the "la la la's" and there are some classic songs in this countdown - including the number 1 accused of stealing it's la la la.

 

 Tuesday - We crash in on mid-October 1987

Yes, it was the week of the biggest stock market crash since the depression. Got the top 20 from that week featuring a number of hits from movie soundtracks including the number 1.

 

 Wednesday - Talking About The Hits Of 1979!

That the answer to the question - "What Choo Talking 'Bout?" Wednesday's countdown takes us back to the week when "Different Strokes" started on Australian television - less than a year after premiering in the US.... And the number 1 from this week in 1979 gave Madonna her big break!

 

 Thursday - Celebrating with Australia 2 in 1983!

Yes, the countdown takes us back to a time when we were still celebrating following one of the greatest sporting wins in Australia's history... The race was run and won in late September, but the party was still going for the crew as they returned to Australia.. Got the hits of mid October 1983 on the way!

 

 Friday - it's the Title Switch 20 20 Retro Countdown!
