Rock N Roll, The Muppets And A Miraculous Innings This Week
Monday - It's all Rock N Roll and we like it!
Can't believe we haven't done this countdown before! There are so many songs with "Rock" or "Rock And Roll" in the title, so we,ve put the top 20 into Monday's countdown. From Joan Jett's love of rock and roll... to Bob Seger's tribute and the Rolling Stone's hit back against the media.. the songs might have different inspiration, but they all share that rock and roll theme. Have a listen to the countdown and let us know if there are any you reckon should've been there.
Tuesday - Back to a time when a collection of puppets changed television.
You might not know this, but Jim Henson and his team had two pilots rejected before they finally got the Muppet Show off the ground during this week in 1976. I've got a piece from the first episode to play as we countdown the hits from mid September '76... and at number it's the group who were at the top of their game. They had 4 songs chart that year, totalling 30 weeks at number 1... more than 6 months on top of the charts, and their signature song was at number 1 during this week.
Wednesday - Dean Jones hits this countdown for 6!
Don't miss the top 20 from the week when Dean Jones scored one of the most memorable double centuries in cricket history. In scorching conditions in Chennai he defied the odds to put 210 on the board and lead Australia to a hard fought victory. We'll hear more about that as we play the hits of this week in 1986 - featuring the number 1 hit that went on to become the biggest selling single of the year.
Thursday - No wire coat hangers... just great memories from 1981!
Do you remember the movie "Mommie Dearest"? The story told by the adopted daughter of silver screen actress Joan Crawford, premiered during this week in 1981...that's where we're headed with the paper chart in hand... and what a top 20 it is - filled with hits from Rick Springfield, Stars On 45, Men At Work, Bucks Fizz and Phil Collins... It's what made the top 20 special back then - anything could make the charts and usually did.
Friday - One of our all time favourite countdowns!
Just recently on the website, I received a question asking if we had done a countdown featuring hits with lyrics other than english.. well yes we have and it's one of our favourites.. so we've dragged it out again. From songs that feature just a few foreign lyrics - like Madona's "Who's That Girl" to hits that need interpretation from start to finish like the classic "99 Luftballons" by Nena - they're all in the "Foreign Lyrics" 20 20 Retro Countdown!
